Impact Not That Big? Mbappé Leaves, But Parc des Princes Still Full, 98% of Season Ticket Holders Renew

With Mbappé’s departure, Ligue 1 faces a series of challenges, but the loss for Paris Saint-Germain doesn’t seem that big.

In terms of broadcast revenue, PSG has seen a decline. The French Professional Football League (LFP) reached new broadcasting agreements with two media groups, DAZN and beIN Sports, in July. Under the agreement, DAZN will pay €400 million to broadcast 8 matches per round, while beIN Sports will pay €100 million to broadcast one featured match. This price is about 20% lower than last season and is the lowest amount paid for domestic broadcasting rights in France in nearly two decades.

Joseph Ogurian, president of the club Stade de Reims, pointed out: “Ligue 1 clubs have never received such low revenue from broadcasting rights.” He added that Stade de Reims is expected to receive only about €9 million in broadcast revenue this season.

According to media reports, the financial situation of the entire league has been affected, and many clubs are struggling to invest in new players in the transfer market. Paris Saint-Germain has also been affected, with their broadcasting rights income dropping to €22 million, €20 million less than last season, which is equivalent to the income received by clubs ranked 13th in Ligue 1 last season.

Despite the pressure from declining broadcasting rights income, Paris Saint-Germain has performed well without Mbappé. In the match played early morning on August 24th, they beat Montpellier 6-0, achieving another big victory after their 4-1 win against Le Havre in the opening match. In the first two rounds, Paris Saint-Germain have scored a total of 10 goals.

PSG’s 2023 profits are expected to fall from record highs to around €300 million. However, due to their parting with Mbappé, the club will save about €200 million, including the former striker’s annual salary of €72 million and related bonus payments.

It’s worth noting that even without Mbappé, ticket sales remain stable. In the first home game against Montpellier this season, the Parc des Princes was full, as it was for most games last season. The club’s large fan base continues to support the team, and this support has not diminished due to the lack of a superstar.

According to reports, 98% of the 36,000 fans who purchased season tickets last season continued to support Paris Saint-Germain this season, indicating that fans’ love for the team has not diminished despite losing some top players.
