A fire broke out in the stands during halftime of the French National 3 (formerly known as Championnat National) match between Orleans and Valenciennes on August 24th at 1:30 AM, forcing the game to be suspended.
The two teams were tied 1-1 at halftime. Smoke filled the stadium during the break after a fire erupted in the concession stands. Players immediately left the field and, after a decision by the referee and officials, the match was abandoned.
The Orleans stadium, Stade de la Source, has a capacity of 7,533 people, although attendance was not high during the game. Fans evacuated the area safely, avoiding any casualties.
Orleans’ official website released a statement saying, “A fire broke out in the concession stands before the start of the second half. The match was abandoned following a decision by the referee and the organizing committee. No injuries have been reported. The club worked to evacuate everyone present at Stade de la Source, and the procedures worked well.”
An investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of the fire, whether it was an accident or arson, and the results are still pending.
