Mason Greenwood Applies for Jamaican Citizenship, Could Represent Jamaica in International Competition

According to TA, Greenwood has begun the process of applying for Jamaican citizenship and could potentially represent the Jamaican national team in international competition. The Jamaican Football Federation has been tracking Greenwood for months and has been working on facilitating this process under the guidance of new head coach, Paul McClaren.

McClaren, who served as assistant coach at Manchester United, knows Greenwood well.

It is understood that the English FA has transferred Greenwood’s registration papers to the JFF to allow them to submit a transfer request to FIFA.

Greenwood made his only appearance for England in September 2020 in a match against Iceland. Because he was under 21 at the time, he remains eligible to switch allegiances. To obtain Jamaican citizenship, Greenwood would need to apply for a passport based on the birth certificates of eligible relatives. This could be a lengthy process, as it was for Michail Antonio, who spent a year obtaining his citizenship before debuting for Jamaica in September 2021. However, the government can expedite the process.

Greenwood was born in Bradford, England and can acquire Jamaican citizenship through his grandparents. McClaren is open to Greenwood joining the team and has already spoken to the player.

McClaren said: “My approach is to get to know every player personally, understand their genuine thoughts and whether they want to play for Jamaica. They are all great players.”

McClaren is expected to announce his first Jamaica squad on August 30th for the upcoming CONCACAF Nations League matches against Cuba and Honduras in September. If Greenwood can obtain his Jamaican passport in time, he could be included in the squad. However, ultimately, Jamaica hope that Greenwood’s arrival can help them qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
