Greenwood scores and assists on debut, also concedes a penalty

Former Manchester United player Mason Greenwood had a perfect debut in Ligue 1, helping Marseille to a 5-1 victory over Brest in the first game of the new season.

Greenwood joined Marseille this summer for €31.6 million on a five-year deal. The 22-year-old English forward showcased his attacking prowess by scoring two goals against Brest.

Greenwood became the third Marseille player in the 21st century to score at least two goals on his Ligue 1 debut after Dimitri Payet (2013) and Luis Suarez (Colombia, 2022). He also played a key role in three other goals.

Just three minutes into the game, Greenwood used his pace to score the opening goal. He then assisted teammate Enriqque’s goal and helped extend the lead through a penalty. In the second half, Greenwood’s cross led to a mistake by the opposing goalkeeper, creating an opportunity for Enriqque to score the team’s fourth goal.

In the 69th minute, Greenwood was fouled in the penalty area by Amavi, earning a penalty for Marseille. Greenwood relinquished the opportunity to complete a hat-trick, and new signing Elye Wahi converted the penalty to seal a 5-1 win for Marseille.

Greenwood’s performance earned him the “Man of the Match” award. His outstanding form did not surprise head coach Roberto De Zerbi, as Greenwood had also impressed during the pre-season.

Greenwood is expected to become a key figure in Marseille’s attack. The club invested heavily in the summer transfer window, bringing in several new players, including goalkeeper Jerome Rulli, center-back Derrick Cornelius, midfielder Højbjerg, and forward Elye Wahi. All these new signings played in the game against Brest.

Marseille displayed good team cohesion with a fluid 4-2-3-1 formation, indicating that they are well prepared for the new season. The arrival of former Premier League stars like Greenwood and Højbjerg will give Marseille the ability to challenge for the title, even though they will face a tough opponent in Paris Saint-Germain.
