The saga of Ligue 1’s TV rights continues with DAZN making another cut-price offer and French clubs facing the prospect of a two-thirds reduction in revenue.
With less than a month to go before the start of the new season, uncertainty remains over who will be broadcasting the French top flight. According to L’Équipe, no deal has been struck with the LFP, France’s professional football league.
The TV rights saga has been a source of anxiety for club presidents since the €1 billion deal was put on hold, as they expected a discount on the price for the 2024-2029 period. Canal+ and beIN Sports are reluctant to meet LFP president Vincent Labrune’s demands, but he has recently received two new bids.
L’Équipe and RMC Sport reported on Friday that DAZN has submitted a bid of €375 million per year. On the other hand, Warner Bros. Discovery has proposed a deal to incorporate a Ligue 1 channel into its Max package, which includes series and other sports content, giving it access to all Ligue 1 games. This solution could generate around €600 million per year for Ligue 1 depending on the number of subscribers.
In the 2023/24 season, Ligue 1 distributed €413 million in domestic TV rights among its 18 clubs. This amount allowed Paris Saint-Germain to recover €43 million, while the bottom-placed team received slightly less than €15 million. If DAZN is ultimately chosen, the league champion could receive only around €15 million, roughly the same amount as the bottom-placed team currently receives. As for the bottom-placed team, it might receive only €5 million in revenue, the same amount as Ligue 2 teams at present.
