According to French radio station “Blue Radio”, Fenway Sports Group is in talks to acquire Ligue 2 club Bordeaux. Negotiations are currently going smoothly.
Fenway Sports Group’s controlling owner John Henry, who also owns Premier League club Liverpool, is the current frontrunner to acquire the six-time Ligue 1 champions. Bordeaux’s current owner is Luxembourg-Spanish businessman Gerard Lopez. The former French powerhouse has been languishing in Ligue 2 for three consecutive seasons. Now, due to financial difficulties, they face the possibility of being administratively relegated to Ligue 3.
On Tuesday, representatives from Bordeaux met with the director general of the French Professional Football League (LFP). The organization is the financial regulator of French football, providing financial guarantees and funding support for Ligue 2. It is reported that Fenway Sports Group sent two executives and a legal representative from Boston for the meeting, expressing their desire to acquire the club.
The radio station further indicated that John Henry, the major shareholder of Fenway Sports Group, participated in the meeting. The group’s technical director, Mike Gordon, visited Bordeaux’s infrastructure, training ground, and main stadium. According to reports, negotiations between the two parties are going very smoothly. Coincidentally, Bordeaux’s current head coach, David Guion, had a long career with Liverpool.
