According to the British newspaper The Mirror, football superstar Lionel Messi’s mansion in Ibiza, Spain, has been vandalized by a climate action group. The 11 million euro property was spray-painted by the group.
The group publicized the incident on social media, posting photos of the scene and footage of its members holding banners that read: “Save the planet, eliminate inequality, abolish harmful systems.”
In a statement, the group explained the reason for its actions: “We marked Messi’s mansion in Ibiza, which was built without legal permission and cost him 11 million euros. Meanwhile, in the Balearic Islands, deaths caused by extreme weather are on the rise, with heatwaves being a direct cause. The carbon footprint of the richest 1% of the global population is equivalent to that of the poorest 2/3 of the population. This phenomenon persists because of the acceptance of a destructive economic model. To address the climate crisis, we must fundamentally reform this system.”
According to The Daily Mirror, Messi was residing in the home with his wife Antonela and their three children while vacationing in Ibiza. Although Messi has not yet responded to the incident, it undoubtedly creates a disturbance in his personal life, especially as he just helped Argentina’s national team win the 2024 Copa America and is currently recovering from an injury.
Messi is currently on vacation, while his club, Inter Miami CF, continues to lead the 2024 Major League Soccer (MLS) Eastern Conference without him. They sit at the top of the standings after 25 matches. Messi’s return date has not yet been determined.
