After joining MLS side LA Galaxy, Reus spoke to Sky Sports.
On his decision to move to MLS
“I absolutely wouldn’t stay in the Bundesliga. And to be honest, Europe isn’t an option for me right now, because I wanted to do something completely different in the final stages of my career. I wanted to try something new with the language, it’s a new experience for the family as well. To be able to be recognized somewhere else, to continue learning, to see different perspectives, that possibility was very appealing to me. LA Galaxy contacted me early on, and I immediately felt comfortable with the environment here. The life here is also good, there are a lot of things to do, which is another important factor for me to consider staying here. So, the decision for me was made quite early, I wanted to come here and continue playing football.”
On LA Galaxy legends Beckham, Ibrahimovic and Gerrard
“It makes me proud. These three guys did incredible things in the past, and then they shone again here. That’s also my goal, I want to be a champion with the club.”
On a possible connection with Messi
“He didn’t text me, I don’t think he would have contacted me. But it’s going to be nice to go against him in the league again. I had two or three chances to face him, whether it was in clubs or national teams. I think any good player who comes to MLS will help the league, not only in terms of attracting attention but also in terms of getting people to understand the sport better, because it’s not the number one sport here. But I believe overall, the league is moving in a direction to make people better understand football and increase its popularity. Any player who has played at a high level in Europe will contribute to that. We hope to see more players like this join.”
What will he miss about the Bundesliga and Germany?
“Of course, especially the Dortmund stadium. The feeling when you play in front of 80,000 people is irreplaceable, that’s an experience that no stadium in the world can compare to. In the Bundesliga, even away games, you feel like there are a lot of fans supporting you, you have your fans everywhere. Whether it’s the same here, I don’t know, but I’ll find out soon. Also the football itself, you’re used to the way football looks, of course the Bundesliga is also evolving. The clubs’ stadiums are very good, the fans’ support is also rare, very few clubs get that level of support.”
On his former Dortmund teammates
“Of course, I wish them all the best. I know everyone there, although there are some new players joining. So I hope they stay healthy in particular, stay positive, have a good start to the season, and hopefully have something to celebrate at the end. I’ll definitely be watching their games, even though the time difference makes the game times a bit different.”
