Peterborough United chairman, Darragh MacAnthony, has admitted that Roy Keane is a brilliant pundit, but he would never appoint him as manager of his team.
Keane enjoyed a glittering career, winning seven Premier League titles and one Champions League with Manchester United. He then went into management and was appointed Sunderland manager in 2006.
He won the Championship in his first season in charge, leading the team back into the Premier League, before departing in December 2008, with Ipswich becoming his next club. Keane left Ipswich in 2011, later having assistant manager roles at Villa and Nottingham Forest.
MacAnthony said: “I enjoy listening to Keane on ITV commentating on football, I love all that, but no way. I know he did a fantastic job at Sunderland, he got them promoted, they went on a great run, won the league, and got into the Premier League.”
“But I think we have to face the facts, it drives me mad sometimes, today’s footballers compared to 10 years ago, 15 years ago, 20 years ago, they’re different. You could say something to a player 15 years ago, they wouldn’t have a problem, you’d give them a slap, the player would come in the next day and be brilliant. If you do that to these young ones now, I’m not going to say weak, but they are a bit sensitive, a bit fragile.”
“I think Roy Keane would scare the life out of every player under the age of 23 in our squad. Our average age is 22, so they’d all probably put in transfer requests after two weeks, he’d have a go at them.”
“Keane probably makes as much money as a pundit as he would as a manager, that’s probably why he doesn’t go back to being a manager. He’s a great pundit, a great ex-player, but I’m not sure he’s a great manager.”
