Brazilian Serie B Referee Makes Huge Blunder, Player Stays on Field After Two Yellow Cards

This bizarre scene occurred in the 16th round of Serie B on July 21st, when Paysandu hosted Ponte Preta. In the 7th minute, Ponte Preta’s left-back Zé Mário received a yellow card for a foul on Dias, but he continued to argue with the referee, Yuri Dacruzes, and was shown a second yellow card. Surprisingly, the referee did not immediately give him a red card and send him off. This allowed the left-back to continue playing.

It wasn’t until the 23rd minute that VAR alerted referee Dacruzes to the situation. After noticing his mistake, he finally sent Zé Mário off. Paysandu won the game 1-0 thanks to a goal by Boia in the 37th minute. However, the referee’s blunder became the subject of intense protest from Ponte Preta, who claimed the wrong decision caused them to lose the game.

Ponte Preta’s number 10, Elvis, expressed his anger during halftime, saying, “The referee initially said that the second yellow card for Zé Mário was for another player, and then VAR intervened and stopped the game. I don’t understand how VAR could know from the sidelines who should have been given the card on the pitch. They were clearly trying to find something, and they succeeded, and we lost the game.”
