The Paris Olympics are just around the corner, with the opening ceremony taking place this Friday. Competition will start before then, with Henry’s France Olympic team kicking off their group stage campaign on Wednesday in Marseille against the USA. Platini has indicated that he won’t be paying attention to the event.
“I’m not interested in the French Olympic football team,” said Platini. “Football shouldn’t be at the Olympics, it’s not an Olympic sport. We bring football because it fills stadiums. It draws the biggest crowds.”
Platini, who was the president of UEFA from 2007 to 2015, said FIFA never wanted the best footballers in the world to participate in the Olympics, meaning participating countries can only bring “B, C, D teams… it’s meaningless”.
Platini stressed that the Olympics, while a great moment in sport, are not the most important football competition.
