On July 23, Goal wrote that Messi should not join Argentina for the 2026 World Cup, otherwise he would follow the same path as Cristiano Ronaldo this year and become a laughingstock and burden for the team.
Messi has had a brilliant career, having won the Ballon d’Or eight times, leading Argentina to the 2022 Qatar World Cup title, as well as the 2021 and 2024 Copa America titles, with many hailing him as the greatest footballer of all time. As things stand, Messi is likely to continue playing for Argentina in the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Goal, however, does not support Messi doing so, stating that he should not go to the 2026 World Cup, “Messi is arguably the most successful captain in international football, he holds the record for most trophies won by a player with 45, and he might want to try and play in the 2026 World Cup. But Messi is already 37 years old, and he will be 39 by the time of the World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.”
The media believe that it is clear that Messi playing in the 2026 World Cup would be a huge mistake, one that could tarnish his glittering legacy. “Ronaldo was very embarrassing at this year’s European Championship, becoming a laughingstock and a burden, why would Messi want to put himself in such a dangerous position?”
