Scottish giants Celtic secured a 4-1 victory over Chelsea in a club friendly on July 28th, marking their fourth consecutive win in their summer friendly campaign and their second consecutive win against Premier League teams (4-3 victory against Manchester City on July 24th).
However, in the match against Chelsea, Celtic’s starting left winger Daizen Maeda was substituted by Honduran attacker Luis Palma after only 35 minutes. After the match, Celtic manager Rodgers addressed Maeda’s condition: “At the moment, it looks like he just hit his knee. It’s not worth risking him at this stage of the season, hopefully, he’ll be alright.”
Rodgers also shared his thoughts on the team’s impressive performance in the pre-season, having defeated Premier League giants: “I think we’ve got a long way to go, I’m really pleased with what we’ve seen. We’ve still got a week to go before the league starts, we’ll see how the players are progressing. It’s been a brilliant pre-season tour on and off the field. I’m proud of the level, the pace, the intensity, the running, the fighting, the goals, the way we played. It doesn’t matter if it’s Chelsea, Man City, or Washington, any top team needs a good framework, the most important thing is having a winning mentality. I think we’ve done that from the first game to the last.”
At 11:30 PM on August 4th, Celtic will be hosting Kilmarnock in their first game of the season in the Scottish Premiership.
