On July 23, several European league organizations, including the Premier League, filed a lawsuit against FIFA, accusing the organization of disrupting the international football calendar and jeopardizing player health with its proposed revamp of the Club World Cup. FIFA responded with a statement pushing back on these claims.
The statement reads:
The current calendar has been unanimously approved by the FIFA Council, which is composed of representatives from all continents, including Europe, and the result has been fully discussed with the International Federation of Professional Footballers (FIFPro) and league bodies.
FIFA’s calendar is the only tool that guarantees the continued existence and prosperity of international football alongside domestic and continental competitions.
Some European leagues, being both organizers and regulators of their own competitions, are acting more out of commercial interests and are disregarding the feelings of the rest of the global football community. These leagues prefer to schedule calendars packed with friendlies and summer tours, which force teams to engage in extensive global travel.
In contrast, FIFA is committed to protecting the overall interests of world football, including those of players in all regions and at all levels.
