According to Spanish newspaper AS, Argentine coach Jorge Sampaoli issued a statement on social media on July 21, apologizing for his remarks about the Paris Saint-Germain player.
After ending his coaching career at Flamengo, Sampaoli stayed away from the pitch but became a focal point again for his comments about Paris Saint-Germain player Ousmane Dembele in an interview. “You know he plays like an autistic: he starts alone and he ends alone.”
The statement sparked controversy, and Sampaoli has now issued a statement on social media apologizing for the words he used.
Sampaoli said: “I never intended to link autism with Dembele. I apologize to anyone who may have been offended. What I wanted to express was individualism. Now more than ever, we need to be careful with language.” He wrote in the statement, translating it into Portuguese and French.
This is not the first time Sampaoli has been involved in controversy. Throughout his long coaching career, the Argentine coach, known for his unique personality, has sparked controversy on several occasions.
Sampaoli has extensive coaching experience, having coached clubs such as Sevilla, Santos, Marseille, Flamengo, and national teams like Chile and Argentina. In October 2023, Sampaoli was sacked by Flamengo and is currently unemployed.
