On August 5th at 00:00, the Dutch Super Cup final takes place between PSV Eindhoven and Feyenoord.
The Dutch season traditionally begins with the Super Cup, officially known as the Johan Cruyff Shield. Unlike many other countries where the Super Cup is played at a neutral venue, in the Netherlands, the match is held at the home ground of the league champions, as they are considered more important than the domestic cup champions. Therefore, the 2024 match will take place at PSV’s Philips Stadion.
The competitors are losing talent and diminishing in strength, but PSV have managed to retain all key players and the coaching team, leaving little doubt about their chances of winning the Eredivisie again. Under the guidance of Peter Bosz, PSV have begun playing a completely different style of football, dominating the Dutch scene. The only concern for them this new season is the number of injured defenders, with the departures of Ramalho and Sambo on free transfers this summer raising concerns. Other than that, PSV seem to be in good shape. They have signed Ryan Flamingo from Utrecht and Malik Tillman from Bayern. While Barcelona left-back Dest has signed a permanent deal after a loan spell with PSV, the American international is expected to be back in action in winter due to injury.
Feyenoord have participated in the Dutch Super Cup 11 times, losing 7 of those matches. While winning the competition is commonplace for PSV and Ajax, Feyenoord lag behind their rivals in this regard. Beyond the Super Cup, Feyenoord is unlikely to pose a significant threat to PSV in all competitions this season. Last season, many believed that the team heavily relied on their manager, Arne Slot, who made Feyenoord a team capable of challenging more successful and wealthy opponents like PSV and Ajax. But now Slot has moved to Liverpool, and his position in Rotterdam has been taken over by Brian Priske. The Dane previously worked at Sparta Prague, where he won two consecutive Czech league titles. However, he now needs to prove himself in a tougher league and will play the role of the underdog in the title race.
Last season, the two teams met three times in total, with PSV winning one and drawing one of the league matches, while Feyenoord secured a victory in the KNVB Cup. It is worth noting that Feyenoord scored at least one goal in each of their three encounters with PSV last season.
In their 71 previous meetings, PSV and Feyenoord have each won 27 times, with 11 draws. In their last 34 home matches against Feyenoord, however, PSV have held the upper hand with 17 wins, 8 draws, and 9 losses. Regarding the home and away statistics, PSV are unbeaten in their last 16 home matches, while Feyenoord are also undefeated in their last 8 away games.
