Di Maria abandons plans to return to Argentina after sister receives death threat

The 36-year-old Di Maria had been planning to return to his hometown club, Rosario Central, where his career began, but those plans have been put on hold due to a threat he received. Di Maria’s sister received a box containing a pig’s head, bullets, and a note threatening her daughter’s life if he went through with the return.

Di Maria left Rosario Central in 2007 for Benfica and went on to play for Real Madrid, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus, and then returned to Benfica. He had previously said he wanted to return to Rosario to end his career, but the threat has clearly made him reconsider.

According to CBS News, Di Maria told Rosario3 TV, “There was a threat against my sister. It was a box with a pig’s head and a bullet. The bullet was in the pig’s forehead, and there was a note that said if I went back to Rosario Central, my daughter Pia’s head would be next.”

“In this situation, I’m not going to go back to Rosario. They threatened my family, and I won’t allow that to happen. Whatever it takes.”

Di Maria added that he is determined to protect the “tranquility and happiness” of his family.
