Korean Media: Lee Young-jun Transfers to Grasshopper Club Zurich, Number of Korean Players Abroad to Exceed 30

Grasshopper Club Zurich announced early on July 30th: “Grasshopper is delighted to sign Suwon FC forward Lee Young-jun. The 21-year-old South Korean player has signed a contract with the club until 2028. Lee Young-jun recently demonstrated his skills during his loan spell with K League club Gimcheon Sangmu. Lee Young-jun also has international experience with the South Korea U19, U20 and U23 national teams. He has a tall frame.”

In the previous U-23 Asian Cup, which also served as the Asian qualifiers for the 2024 Paris Olympics, Lee Young-jun scored the winning header in the group stage opener against the UAE, scored twice in the second round against China, and became a savior for the team, but he was unfortunately sent off in the match against Indonesia.

Due to his outstanding performance in both club and national youth teams, Lee Young-jun has attracted the attention of numerous overseas clubs. Several clubs in the German 2. Bundesliga also showed interest in Lee Young-jun, but he ultimately chose Grasshopper in Switzerland. Korean media believes that if Lee Young-jun can perform well at Grasshopper, he will have the chance to move to an even bigger stage in the future.

Grasshopper’s sports director Stefan Schwarz said through the club: “Lee Young-jun fully meets our requirements, he can bring a different dimension to the game. He is a young player with great potential and he has already achieved results. We are very pleased that Lee Young-jun has chosen to join Grasshopper.”

Korean media pointed out that in this summer’s transfer window, with the arrival of Choe Young-woo to Red Star Belgrade and Yang Min-hyeok to Tottenham Hotspur, Korean football is about to witness the number of its players in Europe exceeding 30. This is undoubtedly good news for Korean football, which is currently aiming to improve its competitiveness for the 2026 World Cup.
