On August 1st, Arsenal lost 1-2 to Liverpool in a pre-season friendly. After the match, Arsenal manager Arteta spoke to the media about the team’s performance and his thoughts on Slot.
What have you learned from the past couple of seasons as a coach?
Too many different things, it’s hard to answer this quickly. The team has to keep evolving and progressing, the level has to get higher and higher because that’s what we have to do.
Do you think Liverpool will be strong next season under Slot?
I think so, we all have to start competing and bring out the best in the team. But the team looks good, from the pre-season games I’ve seen, it’s clear what he’s trying to achieve. It was a tough game for us.
What are your thoughts on the young players during pre-season?
I’m really pleased with all of them, unfortunately, I would like to give them all a chance, but we don’t have enough time. I think their performances and reactions have been really good, so that’s also what we learned from the tour, we have a lot of talent we want to use and they showed a great desire to fight for their place with us.
The crowd tonight was a record attendance, what are your thoughts on the growth of football in the US?
It’s a beautiful stadium, it created a really good atmosphere, it felt like there was something worth fighting for. It wasn’t just a friendly, a big thank you to everyone who came, hopefully, they enjoyed the game.
Are there any major differences between Slot’s and Klopp’s Liverpool?
There are some differences, every coach has his own style. Certain individuals also shape the team’s identity – one is the style of play, the other is the DNA of certain players, that leaves its mark on the team and you can see that in what he’s doing.
Can we see Caicedo in the next few weeks?
He’s been pretty busy in the 48 hours before the flight, then the jet lag, he hasn’t trained with the team yet. We want to bring him in slowly, get to know him, we’ll have plenty of time to assess him.
