At 11pm on August 2nd, in the Olympic men’s football quarter-finals, Japan lost 0-3 to Spain. Spain head coach De la Fuente spoke to the media after the game.
De la Fuente said: “Obviously, Japan is a very good team. They didn’t score, but they did very well in the group stage, so we knew we had to be very perfect. We kept the team intact, we didn’t concede, and we defended as a team in key moments, even when we were struggling. That’s something we need to improve on.”
“I saw an image where Maeda [Ayase] had his foot on the ball at the moment of the pass, VAR could have been favorable, or it could have been unfavorable. I have to congratulate Japan, they are a great team that forces us to work hard. Continuing, improving, recovering is what we have to do in the next games. We played a very good quarterfinal, and I believe we can reach the final. But we need to take it one step at a time.”
