In the early hours of July 31st, all group stage matches for Groups A and B of the Olympic men’s football tournament concluded, setting up a blockbuster quarterfinal clash between two of the tournament favorites: France and Argentina.
In the final round of Group B, Argentina and Morocco both defeated their opponents, finishing with 6 points each and securing their place in the knockout rounds. However, Morocco’s victory over Argentina in the first round meant they finished top of the group, relegating Argentina to second place.
Meanwhile, in Group A, France beat New Zealand 3-0 in their final match. With 7 goals scored and none conceded in their three matches, the hosts finished top of their group with an impressive display.
As per the tournament rules, the Group A winner will face the Group B runner-up, meaning two of the biggest contenders for the gold medal, France and Argentina, will face off in the quarterfinals.
