Brazilian Cup Sees Absurd Scene: Players Brawl in Added Time, Match Ends Prematurely

According to AS, during the recent Brazilian Cup Round of 16 match between Goias and São Paulo, both teams erupted in a serious brawl near the end of the game, forcing the referee to prematurely end the match.

In the first half, São Paulo’s Ferraresi and Goias’s Rodrigues had already engaged in a physical confrontation, but order was gradually restored until the final few minutes of the second half. At that point, the score was 0-0, meaning that São Paulo would advance to the next round due to their 2-0 victory in the first leg.

As the game entered stoppage time, São Paulo players intentionally kicked the ball towards the Goias fans behind the goal, igniting the anger of the Goias players. This led to a shoving match between the two sides, followed by an all-out brawl. Ultimately, two players were ejected, and São Paulo coach Zubiri was red-carded for entering the fray during the argument. The actions of the fans further escalated the situation, as they began throwing bottles, glasses, and other debris onto the field, hitting São Paulo players. Unable to contain the chaos, the referee decided to blow the final whistle.

São Paulo goalkeeper Rafael spoke about the incident after the game: “A beer hit my shoulder, and the beer got into my eyes. Fans tried to hit me with ice and lighters. They also hit Alvorada in the face. I told the referee that if it wasn’t safe to stay there, the game couldn’t restart. The referee’s decision to end the game was the right one.”
