An unusual incident involving Champions League VAR referees has shocked the European football world. According to Goal, Bartosz Frankowski and Tomasz Musial, two referees who were scheduled to officiate the Champions League qualifier between Dynamo Kyiv and Rangers, ran into legal trouble in Lublin, Poland, for allegedly stealing traffic signs.
Instead of focusing on the game from the VAR control room at Lublin Arena, the two referees found themselves in the spotlight of the local police station. Lublin police confirmed that they received a report about stolen road signs and subsequently found three men wandering the streets in a drunken state, carrying the stolen signs. Upon verification, two of them were confirmed to be the VAR referees who were about to officiate the Champions League qualifier – Bartosz Frankowski and Tomasz Musial, while the third man was their friend, also a referee, named Mikolaj.
Facing the police, the three referees admitted that they had lost their judgment under the influence of alcohol, leading to this absurd act. The police then conducted alcohol tests on them and detained them.
This incident not only brought shame upon the individuals involved but also severely damaged the reputation of Polish referees and even the entire European football refereeing community. Considering that both Bartosz and Tomasz have previously officiated important UEFA events, this misconduct will undoubtedly have a significant impact on their careers.
Currently, the Polish FA and UEFA have launched investigations, and the two referees could face strict disciplinary action.
