According to Spanish media reports, former Argentine star Javier Saviola was recently arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and spent a night in jail. The former Argentine international played for European giants like Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Benfica in Portugal before finally retiring at his home club River Plate in 2016.
According to Spanish media outlet Altaveu, Saviola, nicknamed “The Rabbit,” was stopped by police for drunk driving one evening last weekend. The incident occurred during a routine DUI and drug prevention checkpoint.
Although the specifics are yet to be fully disclosed, it is confirmed that Saviola was discovered to be driving under the influence of alcohol around 11:30 PM on Sunday while returning home from a party.
It is worth noting that Spanish law allows a blood alcohol concentration limit of 0.5 grams per liter (or a breath alcohol concentration of 0.25 milligrams per liter) for drivers. However, Saviola’s blood alcohol concentration at the time was 1.10 grams per liter, significantly exceeding the legal limit.
Reports suggest that after Saviola was brought before the judicial authorities, the case quickly went to trial and a criminal sentence was imposed. The sentence includes probation, a fine, and a temporary suspension of his driver’s license. “According to internal sources, the suspension period for his driving license will not exceed one year.”
