Sky Sports: Lee Carsley to take temporary charge of England, permanent role not ruled out

Sky Sports understands England U21 boss Lee Carsley will take temporary charge of the senior national team for next month’s Nations League fixtures.

Gareth Southgate stepped down as England manager two days after their Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain. England’s next squad announcement for the games against Ireland and Finland is scheduled for August 29th. The FA are continuing to search for Southgate’s long-term successor, but with time running short, they will appoint Carsley as interim manager.

The FA declined to comment on the story, and will not be making a statement until a new manager is in place. But chief executive Mark Bullingham said in a statement last month: “Our Nations League campaign starts in September and we have a contingency plan in place should that be required.” This clearly indicated Carsley was in line to take over the reins of the national team if necessary.

Sky Sports understands the FA have yet to formally talk to many of the candidates on their shortlist. It is clear the governing body will take its time to make the right appointment. Eddie Howe, Potter, Pochettino and McKenna remain possible candidates on the list, although the next England manager is not necessarily going to be British, it is understood Bullingham would prefer a homegrown appointment.

Carsley won 40 caps for Republic of Ireland as a player and has been with the FA for the past four years, having overseen both the U20 and U21 national teams.

It is unclear whether Carsley would want the job long-term but it could be seen as a perfect audition for both him and the FA if he is installed in the temporary role. Southgate followed a similar path in 2016, taking over from the U21s and after four games in temporary charge he was awarded a four-year England contract.
