Plymouth suffered a 0-4 defeat away to Sheffield Wednesday in the opening round of the Championship, leaving Rooney with a disappointing start to his tenure as the new manager. Rooney spoke to the BBC after the game.
Rooney said: “I’m disappointed, angry, surprised. I think considering how we’ve been in pre-season, today’s result is a surprise for me. We know how important it is to try and stay calm and composed for the first 20 minutes, and we didn’t do that.”
“The basics of the game weren’t good enough today, in terms of winning tackles, winning the ball, being aggressive, and keeping up with the runs. It’s not acceptable for me. We knew that Sheffield Wednesday were one of the best teams in the league last season in terms of crosses and cut-backs, and all four goals were from crosses and cut-backs today. We worked on that a lot this week, so I’m really disappointed.”
Sheffield Wednesday manager, Danny Rowl, said: “One of the big things for me in the last six weeks has been to see how fit we are, how much we can run, how well we can play when we have the ball, and how good we are defensively. It’s a fantastic performance but I think it’s just one step, you don’t know how good the team is yet.”
“We talked a lot this week about defending properly. We are a team that defends well. We showed a lot of the right things in this game. We can all smile today and enjoy the moment, but we’ll be back to work tomorrow.”
