On August 23, St. Pauli new signing Metcalfe gave an interview with Australian media outlet, *aleagues*, discussing his duel with Messi in Beijing.
After the 2022 Qatar World Cup, Metcalfe played two friendly matches for Australia in March and faced Messi’s Argentina in June. The Beijing clash, in which Metcalfe came on as a substitute for the last 17 minutes, was unforgettable for him.
Metcalfe: “It was special, I’ve always wanted to play against Messi. It was crazy, there were about 50,000 fans in the stadium, but all you could see were number 10 shirts.”
Metcalfe: “I’m not joking, we got a clap when we warmed up, but when Argentina came out to warm up, it was probably the loudest roar I’ve ever heard in my life, it was crazy.”
Metcalfe: “Every little thing Messi did would send them crazy, he’d tie his laces and the crowd would scream, the whole stadium was ignited by him.”
Metcalfe: “For me personally, I grew up watching Messi’s highlights, so to be on the same pitch as him was surreal. Of course, the other players were incredible too, even though we lost that game, I still felt really happy, my parents were so proud of me.”
