Official: FIFA approves change of venue for Peru vs. Colombia World Cup qualifier

The Peruvian Football Federation announced on its website that the venue for the South American World Cup qualifier between Peru and Colombia on September 5 has been changed.

After finishing their Copa America campaigns, the South American national teams will return to the stage of World Cup qualifying. On September 5, Peru will host Colombia. The game was originally scheduled to be played at the Estadio Monumental (home of Universitario de Deportes), but the Peruvian Football Federation requested a change of venue due to other events scheduled around the match. The Estadio Monumental, which opened in 2000, has a capacity of 80,000 and is the largest stadium in Peru.

After a review by FIFA, the Peruvian Football Federation’s request was approved. The game will now be played at the Estadio Nacional in Peru.

Peruvian Football Federation President Agustín Lozano issued a statement saying: “In our home, with our people. The Peruvian team will face Colombia at the Estadio Nacional. For the Peruvian team, playing at the Estadio Nacional is like coming home. We will be playing at the most historic stadium in Peru!” The Estadio Nacional was opened in 1952 and has been renovated four times, in 1992, 1996, 2004, and 2011. It currently has a capacity of 55,000.
