On August 15, multiple media outlets in the US and UK confirmed that Mauricio Pochettino has agreed to take over as head coach of the US men’s national team. Renowned journalist Henry Winter then commented that this was good news for interim England manager Lee Carsley.
Winter said on social media: “Pochettino is set to become the official head coach of the US men’s national team, which surely gives Lee Carsley a much bigger chance of being appointed as the next permanent England manager. By the way, the USSF [U.S. Soccer Federation] has made a great appointment.”
The FA originally hoped to continue working with Gareth Southgate, but he chose to resign after the European Championship this year. After much deliberation, the FA decided to appoint Carsley, the U21 coach, as interim manager, buying time to find a permanent coach.
According to the schedule, Carsley will make his debut as interim England manager on September 8 in an away match against Ireland.
