Fenerbahçe manager José Mourinho said he is a “foreigner” and needs to adapt to Turkish football after his side drew 2-2 away to Göztepe in the second round of the league.
Fenerbahçe’s draw came after a mass brawl broke out in the stands following the match, with the Fenerbahçe chairman being beaten. When asked about his thoughts on Turkish football, Mourinho said: “This passion, this love is totally in line with my passion for football. There are some things I cannot control, they are cultural factors. It seems that I need to adapt, not the other way around. I am the one who came here, I am the foreigner. I am not going to change things. I need to adapt… I’m not a magician, I’m a man of experience.”
When talking about his team being pegged back in the match, Mourinho said: “In a league that is not poetic, this performance was too naive or too poetic. I always say that when we are ahead at half-time, you have to be ambitious, win the game, I think they [the players] have to be clever in managing the game.”
