Eriksson’s Documentary Bid Farewell: ‘Life Has an End, I Hope People Say I Was a Good Man’

Former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has filmed a documentary, with the ailing veteran offering a poignant farewell as he battles pancreatic cancer: “Please take care of yourselves, I hope people will say, I was a good man.”

Eriksson revealed in January that he had been diagnosed with late-stage cancer, with doctors giving him a year at most. He has since returned to his native Sweden for chemotherapy and treatment.

In a recent documentary that revisits his football career, the 76-year-old, gazing at a tranquil lake in his Swedish hometown, delivered a heartbreaking message of farewell: “I’ve had a good life. I think, all humans are afraid of that day, the day of death, but life has an end. I have to accept that. I hope people will say, yes, I was a good man, but not everyone will say that. I hope you will remember that I was a positive man, trying to do the best I could. Don’t be sorry, please smile, thank you for everything, coaches, players, spectators… It’s been fantastic. Please take care of yourselves, take care of your life. Live! Goodbye!”

While managing England, Eriksson led the ‘Golden Generation’ spearheaded by Rooney, Beckham, Gerrard, Lampard, Terry, Ferdinand, and Ashley Cole, but England never reached a major tournament semi-final. Eriksson often drew controversy due to his personal life and affairs.

Since his diagnosis, Eriksson returned to his hometown near Lake Foleken, stating: “Such a beautiful and peaceful place can bring you peace, that’s where I grew up, in Sörnsby, I’ve always thought it was a good place to rest, the ashes can be scattered into the lake, like coming home. I’ve been getting injections for months, it’s painful, but I can bear it. Life doesn’t last forever, but I’m okay.”

Doctors believe Eriksson has only weeks left to live. His health no longer allows him to travel to London to promote the documentary, but it has already sparked a lively discussion in England.
