On August 22, during the Copa Libertadores match between Uruguayan Nacional and Brazilian São Paulo, 27-year-old Nacional defender Juan Izquierdo came on as a substitute in the second half. In the 39th minute of the second half, Izquierdo suddenly collapsed and lost consciousness without colliding with any other player. He was immediately taken to the hospital and is currently in the intensive care unit.
In response, the Uruguayan Professional Football Players’ Rights Association (MUFP) issued an official statement on August 23, saying: “Given the unstable condition of player Izquierdo, we have decided to suspend and postpone all scheduled professional football activities this weekend.”
Uruguayan Nacional also posted a message on social media stating that Izquierdo is currently stable, but “requires at least 72 hours of observation.”
