British Media: Championship Players Average £10,000 Weekly Wage, Clubs Widely Face Financial Difficulties

As competition intensifies, the Championship and League One, apart from the Premier League, have also embarked on a “money war,” leading to an increasingly severe financial crisis for clubs.

According to an article in the Sun, many Championship teams are chasing the dream of promotion to the Premier League, and their average weekly wages have reached around £10,000. Although this figure has slightly decreased, it remains excessive. These players are often less well-known and go unrecognized even when wearing their jerseys in the street, yet they earn exorbitant salaries of £500,000 per year.

Last season, Championship clubs on average lost about £25 million each, while the figure in League One, a lower division, was a staggering £5 million. Unless you’re a billionaire, it’s incredibly difficult to own a team in the Championship. Many players are receiving wages that don’t match their value.

For example, 31-year-old Alfie May earned just £2,000 per week while playing for Cheltenham, but last summer, when he joined Charlton, his weekly wage jumped to £8,000. This year, after moving to Birmingham, his wage further increased to £16,000. Most players at Stoke City earn between £15,000 and £20,000 per week, a figure that is quite surprising.

The enormous financial pressure is causing clubs to face a deficit. The Sun concludes that teams must find ways to curb this vicious cycle, or else it will lead to irreparable consequences.
