On August 23, Courtois took to social media to publicly state that his conflict with Belgium national team manager Domenico Tedesco is irreconcilable. He will not return to the national team while Tedesco is in charge.
His statement reads:
I want to address the Belgian fans and supporters of the national team.
It has always been a privilege and an immense source of pride to wear the colors of my country on the field and to share that passion with each of you who support Belgium. Wearing the national team jersey has always been an honor. In my wildest dreams, I never imagined I would play over 100 games for my country.
Unfortunately, after a clash with the coach and after careful consideration, I have made the decision to not return to the Belgian national team under Domenico Tedesco’s leadership. I take responsibility for my part in this situation. However, looking forward, my lack of trust in Tedesco is not conducive to a positive and healthy atmosphere within the team. I have had several discussions with the Belgian FA, who have accepted my position and the reasons that have led me to this difficult but wise decision. I am sorry to disappoint some of you, but I believe this is the best course of action for Belgium as it ends the controversy and allows the team to focus on pursuing its goals.
Thank you for your unwavering support, love, and understanding.
