According to Spanish outlet AS, Ángel Di María will not be part of Argentina’s World Cup qualifier against Chile in September. The Argentine Football Association will hold a farewell ceremony for the player who announced his retirement from international football after the Copa América.
Di Maria made his decision to retire from international football before the Copa América. Although he is currently injured after a training session with Benfica, he has confirmed he will not be playing in the match against Chile in the Monumental Stadium in September, according to Argentinian media.
After 16 years playing for Argentina, Di Maria has become a legend for the national team. According to journalist Gastón Edul, his wife’s wish to see him play in front of the home fans in Buenos Aires has been dashed.
“It would be a great idea for him to play for a few minutes in the game against Chile, it’s what he deserves, and the fans would like to see that,” she said. “I like the idea and he does too.”
Even though he will not be playing again for Argentina, Di Maria will still have his own farewell ceremony. The AFA is preparing a tribute to the winger to thank him for his contribution to the Argentinian national team.
Di Maria has played 145 times for Argentina and scored 31 goals. He has become a fan favorite due to his crucial performances in major tournaments, scoring in 4 out of the 5 finals he played (2008 Olympics, 2022 Copa América, 2022 World Cup and 2024 Copa América), only missing out on the final against Colombia.
