According to Sky Germany, Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich is the frontrunner to succeed Ilkay Gündogan as Germany captain.
Gündogan recently announced his retirement from the national team, relinquishing the captain’s armband. Kimmich is one of several vice-captains, having made his international debut in 2016 under Joachim Löw. He has since earned 91 caps and is among the most experienced players in the current squad. Kimmich has worn the captain’s armband eight times.
Other contenders for the captaincy include Real Madrid defender Antonio Rüdiger and Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen, who is expected to succeed Manuel Neuer as Germany’s first-choice goalkeeper in the foreseeable future.
Germany’s next international fixtures are against Hungary and the Netherlands in the UEFA Nations League on September 7 in Düsseldorf and September 10 in Amsterdam, respectively.
