August 17, San Diego Wave FC officially announced that former US national team legend Landon Donovan will be the team’s interim head coach for the upcoming season.
During his playing career, Donovan played for several clubs including Bayer Leverkusen, LA Galaxy, Everton, and more. His career spanned nearly 20 years and he won multiple MLS Cups, was named US Soccer Athlete of the Year, MLS MVP, Golden Boot winner, and MLS Cup MVP. Donovan also represented the United States in the 2002, 2006, and 2010 FIFA World Cups, where he was named the Best Young Player of the 2002 World Cup. He also won four CONCACAF Gold Cup titles and led the United States to the final of the FIFA Confederations Cup.
Since retiring in 2019, he was the first head coach in the history of San Diego Loyal SC. In 2023, Landon Donovan was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame.
