Wayne Rooney secured his first victory as Plymouth Argyle manager, guiding his side to a 3-0 win over Cheltenham in the first round of the Carabao Cup at Home Park.
Following a disappointing 4-0 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday in his first game in charge on Sunday, Rooney made changes and his side ultimately earned a convincing win on home soil.
“I thought we played well,” said Rooney after the game. “I think in the first half we needed to be a bit more patient in possession, because I think we got a bit anxious at times and a bit sloppy, and if we don’t control the ball in the game it could cost us.”
“But second half we controlled the game, the tempo was much quicker, we were more of a threat going forward, and I felt we deserved to win. I’m very pleased with the performance, the victory and the fact that we’re through to the next round. I saw a lot of what I wanted to see tonight which I didn’t see on Sunday.”
“So I think it was important for us to try and forget Sunday’s defeat, and the best way to do that was to get a win, and thankfully we did.”
