August 14th Luton Town, relegated to the Championship this season, announced yesterday evening that their former captain, Locke, who has suffered two cardiac arrests on the pitch, has returned to the training field to begin a new rehabilitation process.
On December 16th last year, during a Premier League match against Bournemouth, Luton captain Locke suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch. This was his second cardiac arrest on the pitch in a year, the first occurring seven months earlier during the Premier League promotion play-off final.
The 29-year-old player has been fitted with an ICD (Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator), which will automatically start if Locke experiences another cardiac arrest.
Previously, two players who suffered cardiac arrests on the pitch, Eriksen and Blind, eventually made successful comebacks. However, Locke previously stated that he may never return to professional football as he had followed expert advice.
