August 19th, following Auckland City’s advancement to the New Zealand Cup semi-finals, Chinese player Zhou Tong shared some of his thoughts on social media.
After the game, Chinese player Zhou Tong wrote on social media, “Yesterday was the club’s 20th anniversary celebration, as well as the semi-finals of the New Zealand Cup. A 120-minute battle in the rain, ultimately we won through extra time and entered the final.”
Zhou Tong mentioned, “After the game, I saw the 75-year-old club chairman quietly picking up trash on the sidelines, and saw other founders lifting goalposts in the rain, selling beer, serving the club with their sons and grandsons. My heart was filled with respect and emotion. In life and work, including the initial intention of sports, I believe their dedication and giving can only make the heart more fulfilled!”
Additionally, Zhou Tong wrote, “Over these ten years I’ve seen too many vanity fair, the bubbles of the golden age are easily blown away! Looking back on past scenes, comparing them to the satisfaction and selflessness of today’s feeling, especially this group of founders who already had plenty of food and clothing, our teammates who were “amateur” players, there is a sense of awe.”
Finally, Zhou Tong concluded, “Not everything needs to be measured by fame and fortune, just like most of New Zealand’s Olympic champions are not professional athletes. A new week, rambling, good news, my son is five years old, we advanced yesterday. Bad news, my son is growing up and I’m getting old, my calf muscles are tight again. Actively recovering, striving to catch up for the final.”
