Wayne Rooney’s nightmare start to life as Plymouth manager continued with his side conceding within three minutes of the game’s start.
The 38-year-old took the job at Plymouth this summer, but his side suffered a 4-0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday on the opening day of the Championship season. They followed that up with a 1-1 draw at home to Hull City last Saturday, but this afternoon’s trip to Queens Park Rangers (QPR) got off to the worst possible start.
Plymouth were caught napping from a corner, with Michael Freely heading in the opener for QPR early on. The start sparked outrage from fans, with some already calling for the former Manchester United legend to be sacked.
One fan said: “Rooney will be gone by Christmas.”
Another wrote: “QPR score after three minutes, yeah, Rooney ain’t lasting long.”
A third fan added: “Rooney’s Plymouth is looking like it could be the fastest relegated Championship side ever, likely before Christmas.”
A fourth fan responded: “It’s sad. Wayne better go now, he’ll be sacked soon anyway.”
The final fan roared: “Get Rooney out.”
However, 25 minutes later, Morgan Whittaker equalized with a superb strike from distance. But 76 seconds later, Adam Fox got a second yellow card for a reckless tackle, forcing Rooney’s side down to 10 men with over an hour still to play.
Late on, substitute Issac Isak was also sent off for a second bookable offence, leaving Plymouth with nine men.
Despite that, Rooney’s side somehow clung on to a crucial point – though they managed just one shot on target all game, compared to QPR’s 10 from 30 attempts.
