At 10am on August 23rd, the China U15 Women’s National Team will face the Japan U15 Women’s National Team in Group A of the EAFF U15 Women’s Championship.
The 2024 EAFF U15 Women’s Championship has kicked off at the Dalian Football Youth Training Base. This is the first edition of the tournament, with 10 teams participating, including China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Japan, North Korea, South Korea, Mongolia, Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands. Over 300 officials, referees, coaches and athletes have gathered in Dalian.
The 10 teams are divided into Group A and Group B. Group A includes China, Japan, North Korea, South Korea and Taiwan. The tournament adopts a promotion and relegation system, meaning the last-placed team in Group A will be relegated to Group B, while the top team in Group B will be promoted to Group A. The matches will not determine a champion. Additionally, the match duration is 70 minutes, unlike the traditional 90 minutes.
In the opening match, the China U15 Women’s National Team played against the North Korea U15 Women’s National Team. In the first half, China’s Zhang Lubi scored with a shot from the right side of the penalty area, giving China a 1-0 lead at halftime. Early in the second half, Zhu Yuting’s goal extended the lead to 2-0. However, North Korea then stepped up their attack and scored two goals to tie the game, ultimately ending in a 2-2 draw.
In their second match, China defeated Taiwan 3-0. The three goals came in the 13th, 42nd and 60th minutes, scored by Zhu Yuting and Li Wanchao, with Li Wanchao scoring twice and adding an assist.
In the third round, China had a bye.
On the Japan side, they had a bye in the first round. In the second round, they drew 1-1 with South Korea. In the third round, Japan defeated Taiwan with a resounding 5-0 victory, showcasing their strength.
Currently, Japan tops the standings with 4 points from 2 matches, scoring 6 goals and conceding only 1. China is in second place with 4 points, scoring 5 goals and conceding 2.
Historically, in August 2018, the China U15 Women’s National Team lost 0-3 to Japan in a friendly match. However, due to changes in both teams’ lineups, the result of that match has limited reference value. Additionally, some analysts have pointed out that the China U15 Women’s National Team participating in this tournament is not their strongest lineup, as another U15 team is currently training in Germany.
From a schedule perspective, China has a slight advantage, as they have a bye in the third round while Japan plays consecutively. China’s last match against Taiwan was on August 18th, while Japan’s match against the same opponent was on August 20th. This means China has had two extra days of rest compared to Japan. Additionally, Japan’s previous match was played in the rain. Taking these factors into account, combined with the home advantage, China is expected to remain undefeated in this match.
