On August 18, 40-year-old Singaporean goalkeeper Hassan Sunny announced his retirement from international duty on social media.
In the previous round of the World Cup qualifiers, Singapore, although losing 1-3 to Thailand, goalkeeper Sunny had a remarkable performance, making many spectacular saves, which indirectly helped China advance to the round of 16.
Hassan Sunny’s original social media post:
I made my international debut in 2004 and it is now time for me to announce my retirement from international football. My national football journey has been like a rollercoaster ride with many ups and downs but I cherish every moment. It has always been an honour to represent my country and I will miss the team bus journeys, overseas trips, massive stadiums and so much more. I never considered myself to be the best but I always gave my all, putting in 100% effort in training and matches. It’s now time for me to step aside and let the younger goalkeepers take over. I will always offer my full support to the goalkeeping department and team and will forever be cheering them on. I wish the Singapore national team all the best in their upcoming matches and in the future.
