Wimbledon First Round Recap: Zhang Zhizhen Advances in Straight Sets, Zheng Qinwen Upsets

On July 1st, the first round of Wimbledon saw a number of matches featuring Chinese players. Here’s a look at the results:

Men’s Singles:

Shang Juncheng defeated Chilean star Cristian Garin 3-0, earning the first win for a Chinese mainland male player in the Wimbledon main draw. Shang’s next opponent will be the 10th seed, Grigor Dimitrov.

Zhang Zhizhen also advanced in straight sets, defeating Lorenzo Musetti 3-0. This win makes Zhang the first Chinese mainland male player to win matches in all four Grand Slam main draws. Zhang will face Alexander Zverev in the next round.

Women’s Singles:

Zhu Lin defeated Romanian player Irina-Camelia Begu 2-0. This is Zhu’s second singles victory at Wimbledon. Her next opponent will be Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

Zhang Shuai lost to Daria Kasatkina 0-2, extending her losing streak to 21 matches across the season.

Yuan Yue lost to Dutch player Arantxa Rus 0-2. This was Yuan’s third appearance in the Wimbledon singles main draw, but she has been eliminated in the first round on all three occasions.

Wang Yafan narrowly defeated Slovak player Viktoria Kuzmova 2-1, marking her first Wimbledon victory in five years.

Zheng Qinwen suffered a shocking defeat to New Zealand-born Chinese qualifier Sun Lulu 1-2, marking her second consecutive first round exit at Wimbledon.

Wang Xiyu fought hard but ultimately lost to Donna Vekic 1-2, continuing her streak of first-round exits at Wimbledon for the past three years. She has yet to win a match in the Wimbledon singles competition.

Wang Qiang lost to American player Alycia Parks 0-2, ending her run in the first round.
