On July 2nd, the BWF once again expressed its deepest condolences to the family, teammates, the Badminton Association of China, and the entire Chinese badminton community on the unfortunate passing of Chinese badminton player Zhang Zhijie. The BWF also stated that it would conduct a thorough investigation into the matter.
The following is the BWF’s statement:
Zhang Zhijie tragically passed away during the Asian Junior Badminton Championships in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. We are taking all necessary measures to work with the Badminton Asia Confederation and the Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI) to thoroughly investigate the matter.
While the Asian Junior Badminton Championships are under the jurisdiction of the Badminton Asia Confederation, the BWF does have a comprehensive set of medical guidelines and specifications that can be used by other governing bodies (regional or national) to host BWF-sanctioned events. However, the implementation of these medical protocols and practices at the event site is at the discretion of each governing body.
The BWF is awaiting an official report from the Badminton Asia Confederation and the local organizing committee to assess if the correct medical procedures were followed when Zhang Zhijie collapsed on the court.
According to the medical guidelines, event physicians are responsible, under the guidance of the referee, for managing emergencies on the court (including suspected cardiac arrest), and providing intervention in such situations until appropriate medical services (such as an ambulance) are available.
It is essential to highlight that everyone involved in implementing these guidelines must be prepared at all times to respond quickly to all necessary medical interventions, including emergency situations.
Following the investigation, we will determine if any specific revisions to these guidelines are required.
A review initiated earlier this year is evaluating the BWF’s policies and procedures regarding emergency medical intervention at events to ensure the provision of the most appropriate and timely care. This will also include the BWF’s assessment results and the report from the Badminton Asia Confederation regarding this incident.
