Recently, Rooney was asked at a press conference why he returned to coaching, to which he quipped: “Because I don’t want to be another Gary Neville.”
On May 25th, Plymouth officially announced Rooney as their new head coach. This announcement set him and his former teammate Gary Neville on different paths.
When asked about the reason for taking over Plymouth at a press conference, Rooney said with a mischievous grin: “Because I don’t want to be another Gary Neville!”
“I still have a lot of passion for football, I love the sport, and that feeling has never changed. The past few months have been special for me, I’ve been a homebody since January, and of course, I’ve taken on some punditry work, but what I really crave is to return to coaching.”
Gary Neville’s last coaching job was from December 2015 to March 2016 as Valencia manager, where he led the team in 28 matches with a record of 10 wins, 7 draws, and 11 losses. Due to the poor reviews of this coaching experience, Gary Neville has not returned to coaching since, instead finding his worth in the punditry position.
