On July 3rd, rumors spread that Chinese naturalized player Hou Yongyong had renounced his Chinese citizenship. In response, Hou Yongyong issued a statement on Weibo to debunk the rumors.
The 26-year-old Hou Yongyong currently plays for Ranheim in the Norwegian First Division. He has made 16 appearances for the team this season, scoring 10 goals and providing 4 assists.
The full statement reads:
First of all, I would like to greet everyone. It’s been a while. Some of you may know that the past few years have been quite difficult for me. Injuries have repeatedly hindered my progress. Now, I am happy to be back on the field, enjoying the joy that football brings.
However, I want to clarify that recently, various accounts have reported that I have changed my nationality and no longer hold Chinese citizenship. This is not true. I can confirm that I am, and will always be, a very proud Chinese citizen. I have never considered changing my nationality.
It is an honor to be a part of this wonderful country. I am grateful for everything it has given me. I also hope to return to China soon to play football, continue to grow and learn.
I believe a better future awaits me, not only at the club level, but also in the hope that one day I can represent the Chinese national team. I sincerely thank those who have always believed in me, and I hope to see you all again soon!
