Mexican Football Federation Official: Liga MX to Expand to 20 Teams in the Next Two Years, Relegate Permanently Cancelled

On Tuesday, Mexican Football Federation official Fernando Cevallos revealed the topics to be discussed at the next Mexican Football Owners Meeting, which is scheduled to take place this week. One of the main topics is the expansion of Liga MX from 18 to 20 teams, but without promotion or relegation.

Why is Liga MX canceling promotion and relegation?

Fernando Cevallos announced that Apollo Global Management’s investment in Mexican football will officially take effect. The group will invest $1.3 billion. However, to implement this action, certain conditions need to be met, including possibly eliminating multi-ownership and canceling the promotion and relegation system.

“There will be an audit of these 18 teams. They will check if these teams are paying players and sponsors on time, if they are fulfilling TV contracts, etc., so that the fund can allocate $1.3 billion for 10% of Mexican football. To achieve this, there cannot be promotion or relegation.”

“We will announce the permanent cancellation of promotion and relegation because this needs to be a closed group, with no investment risks. We will also propose that, although it cannot be immediately canceled due to Liga MX starting in three days, the league will be expanded to 19-20 teams next year.”
