ESPN: Mexican Football Federation Dissatisfied with Lozano’s Performance, Veteran Coach Aguirre Set to Return

Sources have revealed that Lozano and his team are facing immense pressure following the disastrous Copa America campaign. The Mexican Football Federation firmly rejected Lozano’s request to retain his existing coaching staff, while he also declined an offer to remain as Aguirre’s assistant coach.

Lozano’s performance at the Copa America fell short of expectations, with Mexico scoring only one goal in three matches and failing to advance from the group stage. The Mexican Football Federation did not initially seek a change in management to solve the problem, but when Lozano’s evaluation report of the team’s situation was widely rejected within the federation, his coaching career with the Mexico national team came to an end.

Negotiations between Aguirre and the Mexican Football Federation will begin next week, and if all goes well, Aguirre will become the Mexico national team coach for the third time. In his previous two stints, from 2001-2002 and 2009-2010, Aguirre led the team to successful qualifications for the 2002 FIFA World Cup in South Korea and Japan, and the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. Aguirre last made headlines earlier this year when he led Mallorca to the Copa del Rey final, where they lost 2-4 to Athletic Bilbao on penalties.
