Emulating James? Mutu: Ronaldo isn’t retiring because he wants to play with his son

Portugal were eliminated from the European Championship in the quarter-finals after losing to France on penalties. However, recent reports suggest that this will not be Cristiano Ronaldo’s last major tournament, as he is hoping to represent Portugal at the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada.

Emulating James? Mutu: Ronaldo isn’t retiring because he wants to play with his son

However, former Romanian star Adrian Mutu, in an interview with local media outlet iAM Stucan, claimed that participating in the World Cup is not the real reason why Ronaldo is not choosing to retire. Playing alongside his son is the true driving force behind his continued playing career.

Mutu said: “Playing with his son is the real motivation for him. The desire to compete in an official match with his son is the reason he’s not retiring. If he was at another club, like Real Madrid, it would be difficult to achieve, but it’s possible at Al Nassr. I think it’s not impossible for him to play with his son in the next year and a half.”

Cristiano Jr. was born on June 17, 2010, and turned 14 last month. He previously played in the youth academies of Manchester United and Juventus. In 2022, he followed his father to Saudi Arabia and joined the youth team of Al Nassr.

It is worth noting that in the recent NBA draft, the Los Angeles Lakers selected LeBron James’ son Bronny in the second round. Next season, the father-son duo will be playing together for the Lakers. Therefore, Ronaldo may also be following in James’ footsteps and making a similar decision.
